Accessibility
We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA on every page of tenhatch.com, so the site works for people who use a keyboard, a screen reader, zoom or high contrast.
What we aim for
- Text and controls with enough contrast to read everywhere on the site.
- Every page usable with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus ring and a link to skip to the content.
- Headings, landmarks and link text that make sense to a screen reader.
- Pages that reflow on a phone and at 400% zoom without scrolling sideways.
- Motion you control. The floating astronauts are decoration: a Pause animation button at the top of every page stops them, the site remembers your choice, and they stay still and cannot be dragged when your system asks for reduced motion, as does smooth scrolling.
- Nothing in the way. The astronauts may drift across the page, but they never come to rest on text, buttons or forms, they fade out of the way of whatever has keyboard focus, they never take focus themselves, and they are hidden from screen readers. Every place they lead to is also a link in the header.
How we check
Every release is checked automatically: each page is tested with axe-core at desktop and phone widths against the WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 level A and AA rules, and the check fails on any violation.
Automated tools find only some problems, so key flows are also checked by hand: moving through every page with a keyboard alone, and reading it with a screen reader.
Known limitations
We do not know of any barriers on this site right now. Each tool has its own site or store listing; if you find a barrier in one of them, tell us and we will fix it there too.
